Looking back at the photographs, I am wondering if one needs to be out in the open sea to experience indistinctness.

Our environment, the one which appears familiar to us, holds cues for our human cognition to situate ourselves. In the brief moments we allow these markers to blend in with the surroundings, we might encounter the world in its own mode of existence.
